Reflections on a season.

Steeler fans, it is officially over. The 2023-2204 NFL season is now “in the books.” Despite the ups and downs, pundits predictions and swings of momentum, the Kansas City Chiefs continue to be at the top of the mountain. I do not think the Chiefs were the “best overall team” this season, but they played the best in the MOMENTS that mattered the most. They overcame every hurdle and continued to make big plays when the biggest of plays were needed. Congrats to them and there is no denying they are in the midst of a dynasty.

When looking back at this season for the Steelers, I truly think fondly of it and its impact on me. First and foremost, this is the season that I began being more organized with my thoughts and assessment of the team through my development of a podcast and this website. These projects have been incredibly enjoyable and cathartic for me personally. They have even furthered my desire to infuse positive energy into being a Steeler fan. In addition, this season provided me several opportunities to connect with my dad and brothers over Steelers’ successes. Watching George Pickens take the first pass of home Cincinnati game to the house while jumping up and down will be something I cannot imagine forgetting. This moment, and many others this year gave me such a sense of pride and joy in our Pittsburgh Steelers. On the curve of “good teams” this year, I firmly plant the 2023 Steelers with pride. Were the Steelers the “best” team? No. Were they in the top 6 of realistic contenders? No. But were they “close” in my eyes? Yes. I think the Steelers have a foundation that can be built on and improved through the draft and free agency. I think that foundation is a solid, young group of skill players and dominant defensive stars. I will spend a lot of time discussing the “holes” the Steelers need to fill this offseason, but today I am happy and optimistic about Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, TJ Watt, Alex Highsmith, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Joey Porter Jr, Broderick Jones, Keanu Benton, and yes, Kenny Pickett. These guys are winners and will win many games for this franchise and fanbase over next several years.

The Steelers played well at times this season, but did have issues with consistency both globally and at certain positions. I have already seen the organization make concrete changes to rectify these issues from the 2024 season. In the last 2 weeks, the Steelers have made some significant changes that will have huge impacts on next season. Arthur Smith and Tom Arth have been added as Offensive Coordinator and QB coach, respectively. They have released Presley Harvin III, Mitch Trubisky, and Chuks Okorafor. These are just the initial changes that have been made in a continued effort to improve on last season.

I am proud of the 2023 Steelers for winning 10 games, giving me a lot to cheer about, never giving up, making the playoffs, playing aggressive D, and always seeking victory. I have enjoyed the ride and appreciated the opportunity this season gave me to create something, spend time with my dad and brothers, and root for something. I hope more fans share this approach and start this offseason with a positive attitude.
