Who are these guys?

Who are these guys? The Steelers scored 32 points last week, and 37 points this week. This type of production has not been seen in back to back weeks in the Steel city since 2015. These last two wins, no matter what anyone says about the opponents, are extremely encouraging. I will discuss the quarterback situation below; however, the encouraging thing about these two wins for me is that both games were the definition of “complimentary football.” In both wins, the Steelers offense, defense, and special teams all contributed in meaningful ways. In both games the Steelers were legitimately the better team. They were better coached, they had better players, and they had better energy. I like to point out to people that the Steelers are 6 points away from being 7-0. They are winning games as a full team and not one side carrying the other. These are encouraging and uplifting signs for a team that many people said were going to be a “bottom feeder” this year.

Let’s talk about the quarterback situation. Last week, I stated that there should not be any question on starting Justin Fields. I was wrong about that statement. However, I do not want that statement to be confused with me saying that Russell Wilson is leaps and bounds ahead of Justin, or that Justin did not play well. After going back over the games, including the all-22 film, it was clear that some plays in the passing game were there for the taking over the first 6 weeks. Last night, Wilson demonstrated his skill, but also his intellect and understanding of defenses. I was thoroughly impressed by his consistent “knowing” where the football needed to go based on the coverages presented. In addition, I do not think he let one opportunity to get George Pickens the ball go to waste. He, nearly universally, recognized when George had a favorable matchup, and then threw him the ball in a way that led to big plays. This veteran skill set is hard to quantify and once you see it, you realize why Mike Tomlin went with Russ in this game. I will say that I am excited about both of these players. I am excited to see what Russ can do over the next few weeks and still feel very confident in Justin if and when we need to turn to him. The NFL season is long, and veterans get hurt. Having a solid, if not good, back up quarterback is one of those difference makers for playoff teams.

Lastly, I want to point out that of all the positions in the NFL, only one Steeler leads the league in their respective position. That is Chris Boswell. The “Boz” is ranked first with a success rate of 95% (19/20 FGs, 14/14 PATs). This guy has never received enough credit for how consistent, good, and clutch he really is at his position. With that being said, I want to point out that the consistent media darling Justin Tucker is currently ranked 17th in the league.

Steelers Nation, our team is 5-2 with a very good chance of climbing to 6-2 heading into the bye week. Let’s be happy and hopeful as this season and team is giving us a good show so far!
